Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week the big finance news involved another huge Secret Lair drop announcement. Going on sale a week from Monday is another huge series of drops celebrating the second anniversary of the Secret Lair series. From a financial perspective, the most exciting drop features three Dracula-skin cards: Exquisite Blood, Phyrexian Tower and Night's Whisper. The drop is selling for $40 in foil and $30 non-foil, which makes it a pretty solid deal considering that the cheapest version of Exquisite Blood is currently around $35 and Phyrexian Tower is almost $20. Even including another $10 for shipping the drop is easily the cheapest way to pick up these cards if you need them for your Commander collection, at least in the US (outside of US shipping is often prohibitively expensive).
Also in the drop is a full 100 card Commander deck built around Okaun, Eye of Chaos and Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom. A handful of the cards (including the two commanders) have new Secret Lair art, with the rest being reprints. The total cost of the deck is $100, which sounds like a lot compared to traditional Commander precons, but the value of the cards in the deck is surprisingly high. Going by the cheapest existing versions of cards, you'll get a $18 Gamble, a $10 Sakashima the Impostor, a $16 Krark's Thumb, a $19 Shadowspear, a $15 Commander's Plate, a $9 Academy Ruins, a $8 Cascade Bluffs, a $7 Inventors' Fair and a $6 Training Center along with a ton of Commander-staples reprints in the $2-$5 range like The Locust God, Niv-Mizzet, Parun, Sol Ring, Muddle the Mixture and more. If you were going to buy all 100 cards on the secondary market it would set you back $267. While there are serious concerns about what products like this might mean for local game stores, from the perspective of a player, the drop offers a very cheap way to add a bunch of Commander staples to your collection and a playable precon deck as a bonus.
Finally in Standard, Hullbreaker Horror was the big winner this week, briefly jumping 72% to $11.50 before settling just below $10. The seven-drop has proven to be one of the best control finishers in Standard, to the point that some people are dropping Alrund's Epiphany from their Izzet decks and using the Kraken Horror to close out games instead. While Hullbreaker Horror is a strong card, I'd look to sell or trade my copies now while prices are high. The only other Standard rare worth more than $10 is Ranger Class. It's extremely hard for an in-print rare to maintain such a high price, especially without significant Commander demand. It's likely that Hullbreaker Horror will trend back down as Innistrad: Crimson Vow and eventually Innistrad: Double Feature are opened, adding more supply to the market.
