Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest gainer was Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas from Commander 2015, climbing nearly 300% to $17. Avatar: The Last Airbender and the recent PlayStation Secret Lair drops brought back experience counters, and Kalemne is one of the easiest ways to get a bunch of them, making it the perfect addition to a deck like Kratos, Stoic Father (Playstation: God of War: Norse), which is driving up demand.
Meanwhile, the Reserved List rare Second Chance was bought out and spiked to $16 this week after some content discussing how the enchantment lets you take infinite turns with Tameshi, Reality Architect. The idea is that once you get down to five or less life, you sac it to get an extra turn and then keep using Tameshi to return it to play during your extra turn to take infinite turns. The main problem I see is that if you are playing with the bracket system, looping extra turns is expressly forbidden below bracket 4. So I guess if you are playing bracket 4 or cEDH Tameshi, the combo could be useful, but otherwise I imagine a lot of new buyers are going to be disappointed once they realize that playing Second Chance with Tameshi is sort of illegal at lower brackets.
Finally, checking in on Avatar, prices are dropping. After being over $200 in mid-October, Play Booster boxes are down to $160, which is pretty close to what you would expect from a typical set, while Collector Boosters have dropped from a high of nearly $1,200 to $550 — still meaningfully above the full MSRP of $455, but nonetheless a massive decline. Hopefully this is the end of the Final Fantasy pricing insanity. It turns out that most sets — even most Universes Beyond sets — are not Final Fantasy, and paying double or triple MSRP just isn’t reasonable for what you actually get from the box. The set once again lacks a chase foiling, like the surge foils from Final Fantasy, which makes it more difficult to pull high-value cards. It will be interesting to see how these boxes react long term. I’ve heard some arguments that since Collector Boosters only get one print run, these boxes will eventually be super expensive due to lack of supply and the unique IP, but at this point there's no way of knowing for sure.
