Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
It's been another fairly quiet week in the finance world. In Standard we are seeing a bit of movement based on the Pro Tour with some of the winners including Angel of Invention, Rampaging Ferocidon, Nissa, Steward of Elements, Angel of Sanctions, and Glint-Sleeve Siphoner ticking up about 15%. Meanwhile, Jace, Cunning Castaway and Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh are heading down because they haven't seen much play in the format. At this point, Standard is mostly in a holding pattern for the next couple months. There's unlikely to be a ton of big movement over the holiday season before Rivals of Ixalan spoilers start the beginning of January.
The big news of the week is Iconic Masters finally hits the shelves on Friday. It's been a couple of weeks since we published our expected value breakdown, and over that time the total set price has dropped about 13%, putting the expected value of a box down into the $190 range. The good news is boxes are readily available for around $180, so if you pick up a cheap box, you should still break even (on average) at the new price point.
Finally, on Magic Online, Wizards announced this week they would be running a promo where they sell play points in the Magic Online store. This lead to a short-term panic with the value of event tix dropping about 10% in a day, although the price (mostly) recovered a day or two later. While the immediate change is unlikely to have a major impact on card values, the fact that Wizards is so willing to make major changes to the economy, combined with continuing unease about the program's future with Magic Arena on the horizon isn't great for consumer confidence and could have a long term impact.
