Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, the biggest finance news comes from Mythic Championship VI, which was dominated by Oko, Thief of Crowns in a historic way, with Oko decks making up 69% of the day one meta, increasing to 71% of the day two meta, and 75% of the top eight. Based on this, it seems exceedingly likely that Oko, Thief of Crowns gets banned next Monday. Right now the planeswalker is $38 (down 19% on the week, in anticipation of a banning), and while Modern and Pioneer play should help it maintain some value, the safest move is to simply sell your copies, especially if you aren't playing them in non-Standard formats.
The other big piece of news this week is that StarCityGames is dropping Legacy from its Open Series in favor of Pioneer. This lead to a lot of people worrying about the value of their Legacy staples, but financially, I'm not sure having less tournament support will have a huge impact on the prices. Cards like the original dual lands are extremely rare (and unlikely to ever become less so thanks to the Reserved List) and staples in Commander, a format that generates way more demand than Legacy for the past several years. I wouldn't be overly worried about holding onto most Reserved List cards, especially those that are playable in Commander. The lack of Legacy on the SCG Tour does decrease the format's prestige, but I'd be surprised if it had a huge impact on card prices.
Finally, Pioneer prices have finally started to stabilize. Rather than seeing a bunch cards increase hundreds of%age points, this week saw just one in Nissa, Voice of (em>Zendikar</em) (up 101% to $22 thanks to Pioneer Hardened Scales), with the next the biggest Pioneer winners being cards like Vivien, Arkbow Ranger and Field of the Dead, both which ticked up about 20%. This might partly be due to some concerns about buying into the format while we are getting weekly banned list updates. The risk of buying into a deck and having it banned in short order is higher in Pioneer than any other format. On the other hand, with the SCG Invitational, a Player's Tour, and Grand Prix on the way in the next few months, buying into a safe deck (one that doesn't have cards that are likely to be banned) does have some merit. There could be another explosion of interest in the format when paper support increases beginning in 2020.
