Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

For the first time in a while, we've had a relatively calm week in MTG Finance as we hit the lull between Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar and Commander 2015 spoilers which start tomorrow. Obviously the big news in the multiverse was the announcement that we'll be returning to Innistrad this spring with Shadows Over Innistrad. While it's far too early to talk about any finance specifics for the set, looking at Battle for Zendikar, one thing I wouldn't worry about is your copies of powerful and expensive cards from the original Innistrad block. We will get a smattering of reprints, but I'm not expecting Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage or Geist of Saint Traft reprints. Instead, the reprints are more likely to be along the lines of Dragonmaster Outcast and Felidar Sovereign. As a result, I wouldn't worry at all about holding these cards over the winter. For high end Innistrad rares and mythics, the bigger threat is the next Modern Masters, most likely in 2017.
In Standard, Battle for Zendikar prices are generally trending down as supply continues to hit the market. Since peaking exactly a month ago at $368.80, a complete set of BFZ has lost 35 percent of its value with the current price at $239.60 and falling. It will drop below $200 eventually, and might even drop below $150 considering the Expeditions are not considered to be part of the set. If you are waiting to buy in on BFZ, the end of spring/beginning of summer will likely be the floor, but by the end of December the set will have lost most of what it will lose.
Speaking of complete sets, a few months ago I was yelling from the roof tops about buying complete sets Khans of Tarkir on Magic Online when they were 65 tix, either to redeem for paper sets or hold. Well, the time to sell has come. The set has increased from 65 tix to 105 tix on Magic Online, a cool 35 percent in four months. In the paper world you can currently buylist out your redeemed KTK set for a handsome profit. I'd lock in my profits now, or at least soon. In fact, I started selling out KTK and FRF this week in preparation for their rotation in April with the release of Shadows Over Innistrad. Since we still don't know how the new rotation schedule will impact prices, I'm playing things conservatively and erring on the side of cashing in early rather than being caught holding when prices crash at some point this winter.
