Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finances the biggest gainer comes from Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander: Thieving Varmint (extended). The double mana dork for spells you don't own jumped nearly 400% to $16, potentially due to the new theft commander Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter (Playstation: Uncharted) from the PlayStation Secret Lair Drops. There is some weirdness here though. Whoever bought out the card apparently forgot that there's also a borderless version with the same exact art, and while the price of the borderless version eventually rose a bit as well, it's still around $5 with plenty of copies in stock. This suggestions one of two things will happen: either the borderless version will increase or the normal version will drop. Considering that completed sales suggest players aren't willing to pay much more that $5 for the card, I'd bet on the latter.
Speaking of weirdness, Wizards reprinted Dockside Extortionist on the source material sheet for Avatar even though the card is banned in Commander and unplayed in other formats. Normally when a card is reprinted it causes the price to drop since a reprint increases supply, but in this case the exact opposite happened: existing version of Dockside Extortionist roughly tripled in price from $10-$15 depending on the printing to $35-$40. This seems to be a bet that the reprint means Wizards will unban the card when the announce changes to the Commander ban list in early 2026, but I wouldn't be so sure. While I do think Dockside Extortionist could be unbanned eventually, I'm not sure there's a direct line between a reprint and an unbanning, considering we've seen banned cards reprinted in the past.
Finally, speaking of PlayStation commanders, Fallen Shinobi is on the rise thanks to Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima (Playstation: Ghost of Tsushima), with various versions doubling over the past week or so. With the proliferation of Secret Lair drops and Wizards doubling down on using the series to print unique new commanders, it's going to be important to track these releases moving forward, because they are clearly having an affect on the market.
