Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive
The biggest finance news this week is the sudden excitement for Nahiri, the Harbinger in Standard, Modern and even Legacy, leading to a 77 percent increase up to $22, making her the second most expensive card in Shadows over Innistrad behind Archangel Avacyn. Everything from Legacy Miracles to Modern Kiki Chord is testing out the card, and while she hasn't put up a big finish yet, Magic Online results suggest it's only a matter of time. I wouldn't be surprised if she maintains her spot as most expensive planeswalker in Shadows over Innistrad at least until fall rotation, and possibly even longer if the eternal hype is backed up by results.
Surprisingly, two of the other biggest winners this week are Budget Magic cards Part the Waterveil (up 47 percent to $5.49) and Brain in a Jar (up 80 percent to $2.84). While we've seen Budget Magic related price increases on Magic Online before (although nearly all of these spikes are short lived as a ton of people try to buy the same cards all at once), these changes almost never creep over into the paper world. I expect that this is a outlier rather than the new normal — the stars just happened to align perfectly for Mono-U Brains.
Finally, we are seeing price decreases from a lot of the cards that spiked during Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad, including Seasons Past (down 9 percent to $7.68) and Pyromancer's Goggles (down 8 percent to $16). Jace, Vryn's Prodigy is also on the downswing, a trend I expect to continue through the summer heading towards fall rotation. If you are holding Dragons of Tarkir or Magic Origins cards that you aren't currently playing, I'd look to sell/trade them soon — they are likely at or just past their peak.
