Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week was a fairly quiet one in the world of Magic finance, although that's likely to change shortly as we enter Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate spoiler season starting on Tuesday. The biggest winner was Aetherworks Marvel, but I can't really figure out why. The best I can tell is that the price increase was driven by a couple of speculative Reddit posts about how the artifact synergizes with Treasure tokens (which count as permanents going to the battlefield when you sacrifice them, generating energy) and could theoretically benefit from artifact support in Brothers War this fall. The Kaladesh mythic doesn't see play in any competitive format and isn't especially popular in Commander, which makes the 78% increase even less logical. While Aetherworks Marvel might be a good long-term buy based on the idea that energy could return some day, for now I think it's safe to write this off as a misguided attempt at speculation.
Meanwhile in the world of Commander, Ashling, the Extinguisher nearly doubled in price, going from $5 to $10 on the week thanks to Kamiz, Obscura Oculus. In general Ashling, the Extinguisher doesn't see much play in Commander, but it is a someone popular addition to Kamiz decks since Kamiz, Obscura Oculus can make Ashling, the Extinguisher unblockable to make sure it removes a creature, or give it doublestrike to get rid of two creatures in one attack. This said, according to EDHRec, Ashling, the Extinguisher is only in about 25% of Kamiz, Obscura Oculus decks and doesn't see a meaningful amount of play as a Commander or in the 99 of any non-Kamiz deck. I guess this just goes to show how popular Commander is these days: even seeing a relatively small amount of play with an exciting new legend is enough to make an old rare double up in price.
Finally, Ledger Shredder ticked up again this week, increasing another 46% to $13. We talked about the Bird last week, and it has backed up the hype by posting finishes in Pioneer all the way back to Vintage. But I'm still not buying at its current price. It's incredibly hard for an in-print, non-land Standard rare to keep a price of $10 or more. Is it possible that Ledger Shredder is a very rare exception to the rule? Sure, although I think it's more likely that Ledger Shredder is near its peak and will start to decline as more Streets of New Capenna is opened. Although, there is some chance that everyone moves on to Commander Legends 2 and stops opening New Capenna, which could help a card like Ledger Shredder maintain a higher price than it would in another set.
