Weekly Update (May 1): Spatial Contortion Promo, Platinum Changes Reversed

Current picture of Jake with his daughter Jamie
As many of you already know — our good friend and longtime MTGGoldfish contributor of Playing Pauper and Commander Clash — Jake suffered from cardiac arrest on April 14th which put him into a coma. Jake managed to pull through and awoke from his coma, and is expected to make a full recovery. I want to thank everyone for the tremendous outpour of support from the Magic community that helped Jake, his wife Michelle, and their daughter Jamie.
However, the battle isn't over. Anyone who has faced a medical emergency in the United States knows first hand of the absurdity of the healthcare system and the insane costs involved. Working with Michelle, we've put together a GoFundMe for Jake and his family to help with his medical expenses (thanks Tomer!). Anything helps and I encourge everyone to promote and share the GoFundMe, even if you cannot contribute personally. Go #teamjake.

Wizards has reversed the proposed Platinum benefit changes due to overwhelming community feedback. Here's the quick summary of the reversal:
- Platinum benefits have been restored for the 2016-2017 season.
- The Worlds payout increase remains for 2016 (total prize pool of $250,000, an increase of $100,000).
- Wizards will reaccess the plan for Premier Play moving forward and will consult professional Magic players in the community.

This week was a fairly calm week, especially compared to the crazy Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad-based spikes of the last couple of weeks.
In Standard, the story is cards that spiked hard at Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad increasing a little bit more. This includes Pyromancer's Goggles, Languish and Hissing Quagmire, all of which are up between 11 and 17 percent. Perhaps more surprising is the rise of Narset Transcendent (up 20 percent to $11.91) on the back of Esper Superfriends, which is quickly becoming the control deck of choice in Standard. All things told, I still expect we are near the peak for all of these cards and won't be surprised to see them on the biggest losers list at some point in the next month.
From a meta perspective, as a set, Shadows over Innistard has lost about 25 percent of its value in the past month, peaking at $432 March 28 and sitting at $320 today. This said, it likely has another 20 or 25 percent to drop over the summer, before potential increasing around fall rotation. I'd still look to sell expensive cards like Archangel Avacyn, Sorin, Grim Nemesis and Declaration in Stone if you aren't playing them at the moment, with an eye towards picking them up this summer while the community is focused on Eternal Masters and Conspiracy 2.
Finally, it looks like Tron is poised to make a comeback in Modern, at least according to Magic Online finance, where many of the key pieces of the deck, including Karn Liberated (up 15 percent to 14.5 tix), Oblivion Stone (up 13 percent to 13.65 tix), and Grove of the Burnwillows (up 41 percent to 28.20 tix) posted meaningful gains this week. Whether of not this translates into paper price movement (or tournament results) remains to be seen, but it appears that at least some people are betting that it will.
