Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, Pioneer is still getting more expensive. The biggest Pioneer gainer this week was Cavalier of Thorns (planeswalker stamp). The Core Set 2020 mythic is a staple in various green ramp and devotion strategies which is what lead to its more than 200% gain to $14. Expect this to keep happening. With a Pioneer Pro Tour on the way and the format slowly making it way onto Magic Arena, it's a very realistic possibility that Pioneer will replace Modern as the most popular non-rotating 60-card format at some point in the future. Get your Pioneer staples now if you're interested in playing the format.
You might have noticed Korvold, Fae-Cursed King (brawl deck) near the top of the biggest winners list this week, but this is a bit deceiving. The version that jumped 160% to $36 is the non-foil Korvold, Fae-Cursed King (brawl deck) that came from Throne of Eldraine collector boosters. While the foil version that came in the precon decks has nearly doubled in price over the past month from $10 to $18, it's still about half the cost of the non-foil. If you need a copy, you'll save a bunch by going with the foil version (or if you really want non-foil The List version of Korvold, Fae-Cursed King (brawl deck) is around $25). Finance quirks aside, the future of Korvold, Fae-Cursed King (brawl deck) is an interesting question. It's an immensely popular commander and sees competitive play in Pioneer, but its supply is high thanks to the brawl precons. Considering that you can still pick up the Brawl precons themselves for around $30 on Ebay, it's hard to see Korvold, Fae-Cursed King (brawl deck) going too much higher in the short term. It's a decent reprint target for a future Commander-focused set, making it a risky pick up, even if the combination of Commander and Pioneer play makes it a potentially strong card to hold.
Finally in the world of Commander, Boldwyr Heavyweights jumped a massive 400% this week to $5.50 thanks to The Beamtown Bullies. The Giant his another hilarious target to force an opponent to reanimate, allowing you (and your other opponents) to tutor up your best creature and put it directly on the battlefield. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the new price stick, at least for a while. Other The Beamtown Bullies buyouts like Hellcarver Demon and Eater of Days are down a bit from their post-buyout peak, but based on completed listing, are selling at their new price points. The real question is how popular The Beamtown Bullies ends up being as a commander. Its ability to take one player out of the game quickly might make it a deck that people put together, play a couple of times, and end up tearing apart because of the potentially unfun play pattern. Cards like Boldwyr Heavyweights are especially risky because they are more or less useless in any non-The Beamtown Bullies deck. If Bullies don't end up as popular as expected, we could end up with a lot of players selling copies of Hellcarver Demon, Boldwyr Heavyweights, and friends, which would bring their prices back to earth. My advice would be to keep a copy of you want one to play with, but I'd be unloading any extra copies now while players are hyped about Streets of New Capenna Commander. We get so many Commander-focused products these days that it's only a matter of time (and likely not very much time) before another spicy new legend comes along and draws the attention from The Beamtown Bullies.
