Weekly Update (Mar 25): Spellbook Jace, FNM Promos
Dominaria Spoilers |
This week we got a tiny trickle of spoilers. Wizards revealed a new frame for Legendaries with Urza's Ruinous Blast, and the return of playable FNM promos highlighted by Opt. There was also a controversial new policy revealed making Firesong and Sunspeaker only available through the Buy-A-Box promotion and not in booster packs (which Wizards promptly acknowledged they "received the feedback" after community outrage). Check out all the Dominaria spoilers at mtg.fish/dom, and check out the important highlights of the set from SaffronOlive:

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
This week has been relatively quiet on the finance front. In Standard we're starting to see some early preorders from Dominaria, but most of the cards are extremely overpriced. Even if you want these cards on release day, it's better to wait until later in spoiler season, and you'll save the most by waiting until after the set releases. While Steel Leaf Champion looks like a strong card, it doesn't feel like a $15 rare and it's very unlikely that all the chase uncommons are worth $2-$4, even if they see heavy play.
In Modern, Goblin Lore is pushing $30 after going up another 28% on the week. Back at the start of 2018, the uncommon was quite literally bulk with copies available everywhere for around $0.25. This makes Goblin Lore one of the biggest gainers we've seen in years. At this point Hollow One has legitimized itself as a real deck in Modern, which means Goblin Lore might end up being the next Mishra's Bauble until it gets reprinted in a Masters set. If you plan on playing the deck you might have to pick them up at the new, higher price point since it seems unlikely we get more copies this year barring a surprise reprint in Core Set 2019 or maybe a Commander deck.
Finally, many of the Modern playable cards from Masters 25 actually started increasing in price this week. Considering how low the EV is at the moment, it might be that these cards have hit their floor. If you're in the market for copies of Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Chalice of the Void, Ensnaring Bridge, Vendilion Clique, Blood Moon or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, in might be time to take the plunge. While none of these cards are likely to spike quickly, stabilizing and rising slowly seems most likely.
