Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Ugin's Nexus Cavalier of Thorns Teferi's Protection

This week's biggest winner comes from Pioneer - Ugin's Nexus (up 126% to $1.90). The extra turn hate/colorless Time Warp hybrid posted a 5-0 finish in a weird, combo-ish version of Jund Sacrifice that looks to loops Ugin's Nexus from exile with the help of Karn, the Great Creator and a sacrifice outlet like Vraska, Golgari Queen or Korvold, Fae-Cursed King. While it seems unlikely that the deck itself will be a true player in Pioneer, it's also true that as a mythic extra turn spell, Ugin's Nexus was probably under priced as bulk. Sticking at the new, higher price doesn't seem unlikely, especially since weird old mythics with relatively unique effects is the exact type of cards that end up finding a home and spiking in price eventually.

Meanwhile, Standard is mostly quiet as players wait for the start of Ikoria preview season to shake up the format. Mythic that are rotating this fall are starting to trend down, with cards like Cavalier of Thorns and Arclight Phoenix leading the way. If you have cards from Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark or Core Set 2020 that you're not playing with at the moment and don't have much Pioneer or Modern potential, it's a good time to sell or trade them away. Challenger Decks are releasing shortly and rotation is creeping ever closer; these cards have no where to go but down, at least over the short term.

Finally, from a more meta perspective, the retail edition of Mystery Boosters released on Friday and it's having a big impact on prices already. Most of the cards in the foil slot are down close to 75% from their pre-reprint price, while even staples like Mana Crypt and Teferi's Protection have seen a meaningful decline. At current prices boxes still feel like a solid open - assuming you can find them for near $100. If you're looking to avoid the variance of opening a box, picking up the singles you need while they are at a discount is also a very solid plan. In theory prices should continue to drop over the next couple of months, although currently Mystery Booster boxes are in short supply. Just how much prices fall will depend on how quickly and aggressively the set is resupplied to local game stores and online vendors.
