This week our biggest finance lesson is that Legacy still has some power in the Magic market, despite being minimized on the tournament stage. Orim's Chant, a card that isn't really played in Commander or legal in newer tournament formats, jumped 73% to just under $14 as a key piece to various Underworld Breach decks that are dominating Legacy at the moment. Doomsday (up 23% to $18) offers another example, with the card being close to a one-card combo with Thassa's Oracle, allowing you to stack your five-card deck with Thassa's Oracle, cantrips, and protection for the Thassa's Oracle win. Even with the announcement of the end of Legacy Grand Prix and SCG Opens, the format still has a strong enough following to move card prices when a new deck or combo develops.
In Pioneer, players seem to be betting that tomorrow's banned and restricted announcement will power down or eliminate the Dimir Inverter deck that has been dominating the format in recent weeks. Inverter of Truth dropped 20% on the week to $5.49 after briefly spiking to $15 about a month ago. Assuming we do get a banning that shakes up the format, keep an eye on Enchantress pieces. While the deck hasn't taken off yet in paper, it has been the focus of some content over the past week. On Magic Online (which sometimes foreshadows paper price movement since it's easy to buy and sell cards quickly) prices for cards like Eidolon of Blossoms, Starfield of Nyx, Nyx-Fleece Ram and Courser of Kruphix are on the rise this week.
Speaking of Magic Online, Vivien, Arkbow Ranger is up to 40 tix (for readers not familiar with Magic Online, 1 tix equals $1). Over the past few months we've seen some absurd price spikes of Core Set 2020 mythics in digital form, with Cavalier of Thorns hitting 60 tix, Chandra, Awakened Inferno peaking at 50 tix, and Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord breaking 30 tix. There are two big reasons why mythics from this set are so prone to big price increases when they see play in Pioneer or Modern: first, a chunk of limited play has moved from Magic Online to Magic Arena, and limited is the primary way cards enter the Magic Online market, so there are less copies of new cards available now than in the past. Second, Core Set 2020 ran up against the very popular Modern Horizons limited format (and Core Sets tend to be less popular with drafters anyway), creating a perfect storm of factors to keep the supply of cards from the set low on the client. As a result, if a mythic from the set shows up in a winning Pioneer or Modern deck, the sky is the limit in terms of prices. Standard doesn't have the same effect since most Standard play is on Arena now. It's very tempting to buy Core Set 2020 mythics at their lows and simply wait for the prices to spike. The potential profits are huge, with many cards going from 5 or 10 tix to 30-50 tix basically overnight once a deck breaks out.
