Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was one of the new Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty sagas Hidetsugu Consumes All which more than doubled in price to $11. While the saga sees fringe play in Standard and Commander, the real reason for its price increase is that it has started showing up in competitive Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy decks ranging from Modern Jund to Pioneer Niv to Light to Legacy Four-Color Control where the combination of blowing up cheap permanents and exiling graveyards makes it relevant in a lot of matchups. This said, the lack of meaningful Commander play limits the ceiling of Hidetsugu Consumes All. If you look at the Standard mythics that end up costing $20, $30 or more, they all have a decent amount of Commander demand. My guess is that Hidetsugu Consumes All is about as expensive as it will get, at least over the short term, although I wouldn't be surprised to see it hang around in the $10-$15 range if it continues to see play in older formats.
Otherwise, most of the biggest price movements this week are tied to new Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander decks. 8th Edition Intruder Alarm doubled up again thanks to Shorikai, Genesis Engine while Unwinding Clock jumped another 40% to $30 for the same reason. Blightsteel Colossus crept up another 5% this week to just under $90 due to Satoru Umezawa decks, which means it has gained back all of the value it lost from being reprinted in Double Masters. Rise of the Eldrazi uncommon Reality Spasm more than doubled up almost $4 thanks to Hinata, Dawn-Crowned, and Daybreak Coronet is up to $14 thanks to Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice. While it's likely too late to save much money on your Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander decks, the main lesson here is to get your cards as early as possible when a new set releases.
Speaking of new sets, we got our first sneak peak at The Streets of New Capenna this week. While Wizards did reveal a handful of cards including the rest of the Triome cycle, the biggest news might be the themes of the set and the related Commander 2022 precons which include Grixis Vampires, Bant Demons, Naya Druids and Esper Wizards. Jund is also supported in the set, but we're not exactly sure what the theme is, other then they are lead by a Dragon. If you want to get a head start on picking up cards for New Capenna, these tribes are a good starting point. Since New Capenna comes with five commander precons rather than two like most sets, expect to see a lot of price movement as we get closer to spoiler season, which officially kicks off April 7. Just be warned, if you do decide to buy some older Vampires, Druids, Wizards or Demons, there's always a risk of a reprinting in one of the commander precons, which would likely cause prices to drop rather than rise.
