Weekly Update (Jun 25): Lord of the Ring Commander Deck Upgrades
|
Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance the biggest finance new is Nazgul (335)s, all nine of them, with the Lord of the Rings uncommons climbing to somewhere between $10 and $12 depending on the art. This represents an increase of somewhere between 70% and 90% on the week. Now it is worth pointing out that most of the actual sales of Nazgul (335)s are in the $8 range, but this is still an absurd price for an in-print uncommon. Exactly where Nazgul (335)'s price goes from here is hard to say. On one hand, newly printing uncommons simply don't cost $10 a copy. On the other hand, cards that break the "you can only play four copies per deck" rule tend to be oddly expensive, just look at Rat Colony, Dragon's Approach, or even the OG Relentless Rats. While the Lord of the Rings set will be reprinted at least through the rest of this year, and possibly through 2025 - similar to Modern Horizons 2 - eventually it will be hard or even impossible for Wizards to reprint Nazgul (335)s since they won't own the rights to the Lord of the Rings IP. My guess is Nazgul (335)s are currently overpriced and will drop as Lord of the Rings is opened over the next year, but long term, once the set goes out of print, they will likely be shockingly expensive. If you need copies, you'll probably save some money by waiting for the set to be opened more; remember it just officially dropped this week.
Meanwhile in the world of Commander, Ishkanah, Grafwidow more than doubled up this week to over $5. It seems like a ton of people are building around Shelob, Child of Ungoliant (extended) decks in Commander, and Ishkanah is one of the most obvious upgrades to the deck. Thankfully at $5 the mythic still isn't prohibitively expensive, but it is a good reminder that when it comes to low-priced mythics, they are often worth holding, because sooner of later the right commander will come along to make them spike.
Finally we have some Modern Horizons 2 news, with Academy Manufactor doubling up in price around $7 thanks to all the new Food token synergies in Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth. The more important news here is that after releasing in July of 2021 and being printed continually since, rumor has it has Modern Horizons 2 is finally going out of print. This means two things: first, if there are Modern Horizons 2 cards you still need, you should probably pick them up soon. Second, based on the rumored reprinting time frame of Modern Horizons 2 and Wizards mentioning off-handedly that Lord of the Rings will leave Magic Arena in 2025, it's pretty safe to assume that whatever deal Wizards worked out for Lord of the Rings allows them to do new print runs of the set for the next two years, which would make the release similar to Modern Horizons 2, at least as far as reprint potential. As such, expect the prices of cards from the set to drop a lot.
