Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Crucible of Worlds Higure, the Still Wind Sliver Queen

This week the biggest finance news involves the impending release of Modern Horizons which is having a major impact on prices across formats. The biggest winners relate to the land theme of the set, with Crucible of Worlds (with the M19 printing up 26% to $25) and Life from the Loam (up 58% to $25 or $30 depending on the printing) leading the way. These cards work really well with the Onslaught cycling lands which are coming to Modern for the first time, as well as Wrenn and Six, Ayula's Influence, and the canopy land cycle. Whether some sort of Loam-style decks ends up being top tier in Modern remains to be seen (it does pick up on a lot of the graveyard hate already in the format). This said, both Crucible of Worlds and Life from the Loam have a history of being quite expensive before they were reprinted, so seeing them maintain their new higher price wouldn't be a surprise.

Meanwhile, Higure, the Still Wind increased a massive 188% to over $12 thanks to all of the new Ninjas in Modern Horizons. One of the weird aspects of the Ninja tribe is there simply aren't that many members. Before Modern Horizons, there were less than 10 Ninjas legal in Modern, with a handful more from supplemental products. If you're thinking of building Ninjas in Commander or Modern, you might as well pick up the other cheap tribe members now since there's some chance they spike as well. Even in the worst case, they are unlikely to go down in price in the near future.

Finally a word on Slivers. Most of the five-color Sliver legends were bought out recently, with Sliver Legion cracking $100 and Sliver Queen almost $200. I would hold off on buying at these prices. A quick look at completed listing on Ebay shows that Sliver Queen is being sold for somewhere around $120-$130 and while Sliver Legion is selling for something close to its retail price ($90 to $110), Sliver Legion doesn't have the backing of the Reserved List, which means a future reprint is likely. The retail price on Sliver Queen should drop fairly quickly back towards $125, so you'll save some money by waiting or shopping for a deal, and Sliver Legion is the type of card that will drop a ton once it is reprinted. Unless you want to pay $100 for a card that will almost certainly be worth $50 or less at some point in the future, it's probably better just to play without the Future SIght rare for the time being.
