Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
It's been a crazy week in Magic, but thankfully the finance world hasn't gotten too out of control. The biggest news is the banning of Aetherworks Marvel in Standard. While the change hasn't taken effect in paper yet, it has on Magic Online, and the movement of digital cards gives us a pretty good idea of what may soon happen in paper. Many of the biggest winner are planeswalkers, with Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar all increasing between 20% and 40% on the week. Based on early results, Mono-Black Zombies may be the best deck in the format, and Relentless Dead again doubled in price. Finally, the last group of winners are GBx cards like Tireless Tracker and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, which could be on the upswing in a world without turn four Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hungers.
Meanwhile, we also learned that the core set checklands/buddylands are likely to return this fall in Ixalan, which has several financial implications. First, it lets everyone know ahead of time that we shouldn't expect an expensive land cycle. Second, it gives everyone ample time to pick up their copies. Even though the massive number of printings should keep Glacial Fortress and friends from spiking too hard, it's probably isn't a bad idea to pick up a playset since prices are low. Finally, in Magic Online, all the buddylands are already up significantly, making investing in them a bad idea, although picking up a playset is probably still a reasonable plan.
Finally, our irrational buyout of the week is Reki, the History of Kamigawa, which increased over 500% to about $10. This seems to be in response to the possibility of legendary planeswalkers in Ixalan, which would almost certainly bring with it a rules change (most likely the elimination of the planeswalker uniqueness rule). Even if all of these things do end up being true, it's hard to imagine that Reki, the History of Kamigawa is significantly better, although the supply is low enough that the new price will likely stick to some extent.
