Weekly Update (Jul 24): Original Legends Cards in Dominaria United
Dominaria United Previews |
This week we received early previews for not one, but two sets! Dominaria United showed us a new Jaya planeswalker, a new twist on basic lands, and the reveal of original Legends cards being inserted into Collector Boosters at a 3% rate! SDCC brought us early Unfinity previews, with the reveal of "Sticker Sheets" being Eternal legal. Stickers are fairly complicated and you can find the explanation in the preview article below. Be sure to check out all the latest previews at www.mtgpreviews.com

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
This week the biggest finance news was Wizards offering an early sneak peak at Dominaria United. Perhaps the most interesting aspect is a promotion involving the original Legends expansion with Wizards discovering a bunch of old boxes in a warehouse, opening them, and inserting the cards into collector booster packs. While the possibility of opening a $4000 card like The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is super exciting, when you actually dig into the numbers it seems unlikely that the Legends promotion will have a huge impact on the value of opening Dominari United collector boosters for a few reasons. First and foremost, you'll only get a Legends card in about 3% of collector boosters, making them quite scarce. Second, while Legends cards are generally pretty expensive, collectors boosters will contain cards of all rarities, which means even if you're lucky enough to be in the 3%, you'll likely pull a common (most of which are worth between bulk and $3). Finally, because some cards are being purposefully excluded for various reasons and because of Legends weird print runs, some of the most valuable lower rarity cards in the set including Darkness, Mana Drain, Sylvan Library and Underworld Dreams (the most valuable common and three most valuable uncommons) won't be found in collector boosters. Taken as a whole, this means that the chance of opening a Legends card in a collector booster is more of a cool, fun gimmick than something that is likely to add a lot of value.
As far as existing cards, the price of Double Masters 2022 reprints ticked down slightly this week, although the biggest losers are lower-end rares and overpriced uncommons rather than chase mythics, which declined a tiny bit (generally between 1% and 3%) but were mostly stable. With boxes stabilizing around $340 and the focus shifting to Dominaria United, you're probably safe to pick up the cards that you need. It's unlikely that the most important cards from the set drop much more in price at this point, and eventually they will start to climb again as supply dries up.
Finally, several of the cards that were mentioned on the Command Zone podcast as underrated in Commander spiked this week, lead by Seedtime and Holistic Wisdom which both nearly doubled in price. Personally I'd dig up my copies and sell or trade them away into the hype. While both cards are interesting, neither sees a meaningful amount of play in Commander at the moment and I'm not sure that this will change in the long run. While Seedtime does offer a unique effect, it can be pretty hit or miss depending on your pod - if there's no Crim (i.e. a blue draw-go control player) it's likely to be uncastable. As for Holistic Wisdom, green has a lot of recursion and while being repeatable is nice, having to exile a card from your hand means it doesn't generate card advantage like Eternal Witness and friends. My guess is that prices will slowly trend back down as the post-podcast buying hype wears off.
