Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The big finance news was the M19 printing of Llanowar Elves, which for a short time was as high as $20. While this is partly because the card is from the Welcome Decks and partly because of a very small printing error, the real reason for the price spike is pretty simple: only one person was selling the card on TCGplayer and they were asking an unreasonably high price. When you see a crazy price spike, it's always smart to check and see how many copies of the card are actually for sale, because low supply often explains the pricing weirdness. As of today, there's more than 30 vendors selling Llanowar Elves and the price is under $6 (with some copies under $3) and dropping fast.
Meanwhile in Modern we had a few buyouts. Mausoleum Wanderer increased 262% to just under $5 on the back of Spirits seeing a huge increase of play thank to the printing of Supreme Phantom in Core Set 2019. Vedalken Archmage jumped 274% to over $7 in response to the announcement that UR Artifacts will be a Commander 2018 deck. Finally, Meishin, the Mind Cage was the biggest winner, shooting up a massive 518% to about $10, mostly likely due to the popularity of Arcades, the Strategist in Commander. The enchantment is a perfect fit for an Arcades deck since your team is dealing damage equal to their toughness anyway and because the card draw ability on Arcades, the Strategist helps power up Meishin.
Finally, speaking of Commander, if you're planning on building around or upgrading Commander 2018 decks, make sure to pick up the cards you need early (spoilers for the set officially start tomorrow). Obvious upgrade cards will get bought out quickly and often end up several times more expensive. If you pick things up early, you can beat the rush of players buying these cards and lock in better prices.
