This week, most of the biggest finance news is attached to the release of Core Set 2021 and Jumpstart. In Modern two of the biggest winners were Auntie's Hovel (up 56% to $41) and the Champions of Kamigawa printing of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker (up 37% to $31), both pieces of the new and improved Goblins deck featuring a turn three infinite combo with Conspicuous Snoop. While the deck has posted several solid finishes on Magic Online, I'm not sure what to make of these prices increases. You can still buy Masters set printings of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker for around $12 and while Auntie's Hovel is a great dual land for Goblin tribal, it's not that much better than playing another fetchland or Blood Crypt, which means if the price gets too high, some players might just substitute rather than paying $160 for a playset of a land that goes into exactly one deck. I'd lean towards selling into the hype, even though I believe Goblins with Conspicuous Snoop is a legitimate deck in the Modern format.
Meanwhile, Allosaurus Shepherd — the most playable Jumpstart mythic in non-Commander formats like Legacy — has shot up to $120. This is in large part due to the lack of supply at the moment both because the set hasn't officially released and because the pandemic decreases the amount of Jumpstart Wizards was able to print in the first print run. While you can find copies for less on sites like Ebay, the most recent auction completed was for $81, so the card seems to be absurdly expensive everywhere at the moment. The good news is this makes opening boxes of Jumpstart more valuable. The bad news is that supply issues are likely to remain for a few weeks or even months, and chase cards from Jumpstart are going to be quite expensive. If you need copies of cards from the set, the best plan is likely to wait until a larger second print run comes out in the future. In the meantime, the choice is either to pay a huge premium or to go without.
Finally, we have Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath which increased another 15% this week and is currently a few cents under $60. The demand for Uro is extremely high. The Theros: Beyond Death mythic is currently the most-played creature in Standard showing up in 49% of decks and the most-played creature in Modern appearing in 25% of decks. The question isn't whether Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is good, it's whether it's too good. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath high on the ban watch list in both formats. As we saw in Oko, Thief of Crowns (which is down to $15 after being as high as $65 before being banned across formats), if Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath does end up banned in both formats, the price will drop a ton. If you're playing an Uro deck, you can't really sell your copies because there isn't a replacement, but if you have extras around, the smart move is probably to sell or trade them away now just in case the ban hammer drops in the future.
