Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was Unlicensed Hearse. The Streets of New Capenna rare was around $1 back near the beginning of May and now, just two months later, it's $12 thanks to an increasing amount of play from Standard back through Modern. This means that Unlicensed Hearse is on course to pass Ob Nixilis, the Adversary to become the third most expensive card from the set, following Ledger Shredder and Bootleggers' Stash. Considering that Bootleggers' Stash has fallen from around $35 to $17, it's not impossible that Unlicensed Hearse will pass it as well. I think there are two lessons that we can learn from the huge price increase of the Vehicle. First, formats like Modern and Pioneer still matter financially. Unlicensed Hearse sees almost zero commander play and has still become quite expensive. Second, don't underestimate the power of being colorless. Beneath everything else, Magic prices mostly are the result of supply and demand, and being colorless is an almost guaranteed way for a card to have heavy demand because it can be played in any deck. Next time you see a colorless card that gets some Modern and Pioneer hype during spoiler season, it might be worth snagging a few copies, especially if it's anywhere nears as cheap as Unlicensed Hearse was a couple months back.
Double Masters 2022 will officially release this Friday, and prices are still pretty high. In fact, the cost of buying a complete set of Double Masters 2022 has actually ticked up a little bit in the past seven days, although there is a bit of good news: draft booster boxes, which were around $375 a few days ago have fallen back under $350 on TCGplayer. In theory the prices of key singles should start to fall more rapidly once the set releases and supply hits the market. If you're hoping to pick up the single you need at a discount, I'd wait at least another week or two, and possibly a bit longer. With prices dropping and Amazon once against having boxes for sale (albeit at the high price of $380), things are looking a bit more hopeful as far as supply goes, which in turn could lead to more boxes being opened and a bigger decrease in the prices of reprinted singles.
Finally in the world of Pioneer, Mono-Green Ramp has proven itself to be perhaps the best deck in the format in the wake of the banning of Winota, Joiner of Forces and Expressive Iteration, and prices are shooting up. Cavalier of Thorns shows up near the top the biggest gainers list this week, increasing 14% to $22.50, a nearly 1000% jump from its price back in April when it was a couple of dollars. Meanwhile, Sylvan Caryatid is up to $11 from $5 a few months back, Oath of Nissa has went from $3 to $8, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx has climbed from $25 to $40. A year ago one of the biggest draws of Pioneer was how inexpensive it was to put together top tier decks, but now several decks are over $500 and prices seem to be rising across the board. With Double Masters 2022 offering little help for non-Commander formats, hopefully Wizards takes notice. While a Pioneer Masters set would be a huge deal for Magic Arena, we're quickly getting to the point where we need one in paper as well to help keep the price of the format in check.
