It's crash week for Oath of the Gatewatch, with nearly all of the chase cards in the set dropping between 14 and 22 percent since they officially released last Friday. This list includes Kozilek's Return, Kozilek, the Great Distortion, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Thought-Knot Seer, Mirrorpool, Oath of Nissa, and pretty much everything else that started out at a meaningful price during preorders. This is normal as supply enters the market, and I expect the trend to continue for most cards over the next couple months leading up to rotation, with some cards starting to rebound in March in preparation for a fresh Standard format.
This said, there are a couple cards that bucked the trend and increased. The biggest winner is Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, which has proven to be invaluable in fighting against Rally the Ancestors. While it is typically a one- or two-of, it shows up in a wide array of decks, and as a result increased 64 percent to $12.48. He will fall eventually, but I expect Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet to remain an important part of the format at least until Rally rotates in April. Other OGW winners include World Breaker and Sylvan Advocate, both of which are having more immediate impact than most people initially thought, although here again I expect the mid-term trajectory to be down.
In Modern, Past in Flames is the latest card to be bought out, jumping 113 percent to $13.73. It's still hard to know what's really happening with Modern. Is Storm a candidate to be the breakout deck at Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch next weekend, or is someone just betting that it was underpriced as a one-print mythic that sees play all the way back to Legacy? Like usual, I'm taking a conservative wait-and-see approach, but $10-$15 doesn't seem unreasonable for the key card in a Modern/Legacy deck.
Finally, a couple of quick reminders. First, if you are planning on placing any bets on the upcoming Pro Tour, do it soon. Don't be the person frantically clicking refresh Friday morning while you should be watching a very exciting event. If you think Eye of Ugin or Thought-Knot Seer (for example) is going to be the breakout card, buy your playset today. Second, if you've been playing Oath of the Gatewatch prerelease events on Magic Online, sell anything and everything you open ASAP. Release events start tomorrow and prices will crash quickly. You'll be able to rebuy most of your prerelease pulls by next weekend for half price.
