Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, much of the biggest news is tied to Murders at Karlov Manor spoilers. The biggest gainer of the week was Nantuko Shrine which jumped around 300% to over $4.50. At first glance, the enchantment looks horrible for Commander since it specifically cares about multiples of the same card by making X 1/1 Squirrels whenever a player casts a spell where X is the number of cards in all graveyards with the same name, which doesn't line up well with the 100 card singleton nature of Commander. However, Murders gave us another "you can play any number of these in your deck" cards in Slime Against Humanity, which happens to be green and cares about tokens. It seems like players are planning to use Nantuko Shrine in the 99 as a backup for Slime Against Humanity, causing the spike, although in reality, the fact that Nantuko Shrine is like 25 years old and has never been reprinted certainly plays a large role as well.
Speaking of Slime Against Humanity, the card is also causing a bit of weirdness with the price of Greater Good. A few days ago there was a MTG finance Reddit post about cards to spec on thanks to Slime Against Humanity and one popular choice was Greater Good. As a result, the 9th Edition printing was bought out with its price roughly doubling from $10 to $20, which technically puts Greater Good as one of the biggest gainers of the week. The thing is, Greater Good has been reprinted a bunch of times and while the other printings have been slowly trending up for the past few months, you can still buy AFR Commander, Battlebond, and Double Masters printings of Greater Good for under $10. Why anyone would buy out just the white border printing of a card with nearly infinite reprints I have no idea, but feel free to ignore the price movement; there are plenty of copies of Greater Good to go around.
Meanwhile in Standard, Toxic seems to be the new hot deck with its combo/aggro plan offering players a way to sneak in under Domain and the other slower midrange decks in the format. Thanks to the increase in Toxic, key cards like Venerated Rotpriest (prerelease) (up 49% to over $7) and March of Swirling Mist (extended) (up 57% to nearly $6) are on the rise. Both cards seem like reasonable pickups, especially if you are interested in playing the Toxic deck in Standard with Venerated Rotpriest (prerelease) occasionally showing up in meme decks in Pioneer and Modern, and March of Swirling Mist (extended) being a solid way to protect your team (or force through some damage) in Commander. So even once Toxic falls out of favor in Standard, there should still be some demand for both cards.
