Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive
|
|
Welcome to one of the busiest weeks of the year for MTG finance! Let's start with Commander where Seedborn Muse — the most viewed card on the site this week — doubled or tripled (depending on version) in price from $12 to between $24 and $34. Speculators seem to be pegging it as a replacement for the banned Prophet of Kruphix, but most EDH finance people I know seem to think this is misguided; the real power of Prophet of Kruphix was the "you can play creatures as if they had flash" ability. While it likely won't go back to $12, I expect the retail price to continue to fall over coming days and weeks.
In Standard, World Breaker is showing up as a four-of in many Eldrazi lists and is just starting to show movement (up 24 percent to $12 in the past day). One such deck was featured on camera going 9-0 at the SCG Tour this weekend. If it continues its run of dominance, I would expect even more of a spike over the next couple days. Even though it will come back down to earth eventually, the supply of Oath is currently low enough for a mythic to jump from $8 to $15 overnight off the results of one event.
Land destruction spells are the talk of the week in Modern with Boom // Bust, Fulminator Mage and Flagstones of Trokair (which synergizes with Boom // Bust) being among the biggest gainers. The assumption seems to be that Eldrazi and Tron will be major players in the new format, along with Affinity and Infect, all of which have lands worth killing. This said, we haven't had a single major event since the Splinter Twin and Summer Bloom banning, meaning most of these ideas are "in theory" only at this point. We'll know much more over the next few weeks and of course, at the Modern Pro Tour.
Finally, we also had some irrationality this week, highlighted by the Mindslicer buyout. Remember, just because a card price is spiking does not mean it has actual demand. The price of cards, especially older cards, is easy to manipulate because the supply is often so low. If you train yourself to think in buylist prices (which are much harder to manipulate), you'll be less likely to get burned and be more likely to able to figure out what is truth and what is hype.
