Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance it was fairly quiet, perhaps the calm before the storm of Aetherdrift which is coming next week. The biggest gainer was Overlord of the Balemurk (prerelease) which gained 160% up to $31, making it the most expensive Overlord and second most expensive card from Duskmourn. There are two big reason for the increase. First, players are starting to adopt Overlord of the Balemurk (prerelease) in Esper Pixie in Standard, but perhaps more importantly, it's emerging as a Modern staple in Orzhov Taxes, which looks to use cards like Flickerwisp to blink it into play on the cheap. Way back during spoiler season Overlord of the Balemurk (prerelease) was my pick for best of the Overlords, and while it took a few months, it looks like that prediction might finally be paying off.
Meanwhile in Modern we're seeing the post-ban meta solidify with three tier one decks: Energy, Dimir Frog, and Grinding Station. As a result of its new found playability, the price of Grinding Station is ticking up. It is currently sitting at $18 after being around $11 before the unbans. At its peak back in 2023, Grinding Station hit $40, so there might be more room to grow, but it's possible that the recent Mystery Booster 2 reprinting might keep its growth in check.
Finally, in stranger news, Tempting Wurm doubled up this week to $10, despite it being one of the worst creatures ever printed. As far as I can tell there's no real reason for this price increase. The card shows up in 0% of decks according to EDHRec and definitely isn't seeing 60-card play. I guess the lesson here is to hold onto old cards with unique effects, even if they are horrible, because you never know when those cards are going to end up being worth $10 for no reason at all.
