Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Shielded by Faith Fractured Powerstone Hermit Druid

This week, Theros: Beyond Death is driving much of the casually-focused finance news, with Shielded by Faith leading the way, doubling or tripling in price (depending on the printing) thanks to a new two-card combo with Siona, Captain of the Pyleas. Casting Shielded by Faith on any of your creatures with Siona on the battlefield leads to infinite 1/1 Human Soldier tokens, as you can keep moving Shielded by Faith from token to token as they enter the battlefield, which keeps triggering Siona, Captain of the Pyleas to make more tokens. The good news is that, even with the recent price spike, you can still get copies of Shielded by Faith for between $2 and $3.

In stranger news, Fractured Powerstone (up more than 100% $6-$7, depending on the version) was bought out this week. While Fractured Powerstone is technically a two-mana mana rock, unless you happen to be playing Planechase, it is as bad as a two-mana mana rock can be, just tapping for a colorless mana. Figuring out why Fractured Powerstone was bought out is tricky. The newly previewed Nyxbloom Ancient does work well with mana rocks, although Fractured Powerstone is so bad that it's hard to imagine that even mana rock-heavy Commander decks wanting it outside of troll value. Meanwhile, some have speculated that another Planechase will be announced in the future and someone manage to get the information early. With 2020's focus on new Commander products, a new Planechase doesn't seem all that likely this year. Another possibility is someone betting that Fractured Powerstone will be good someday. If "roll a die" is ever supported like "flip a coin" is in Magic, it's possible there will be a Commander deck where Fractured Powerstone is the best mana rock rather than the worst. Regardless of the reason, if you have copies around, dig them out and try to sell or trade them while the price is high if you can - it's a buyout that doesn't make much sense.

Finally, speaking of buyouts, Hermit Druid was bought out this week, going from around $8 to $40 briefly before settling at $16.50 for the moment. Hermit Druid is one of the fastest ways to fill your graveyard in Commander, especially if you are willing to play very few basic lands in your deck. It is an interesting way to support the escape mechanic from Theros: Beyond Death as well as a potential combo piece for Thassa's Oracle. Buylist prices have ticked up as well, suggesting Hermit Druid's price will probably stick somewhere in the mid-teens, which makes sense considering how unique and powerful its effect is. Just be warned that Hermit Druid is not on the Reserved List, so it could be reprinted in a future Commander-focused product, which would likely drop the value down near bulk. While Hermit Druid is powerful, its price tag is more a testament to its scarcity than anything else (its only printing since Stronghold is an old Judge Promo).
