Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is mostly about the impending release of Lorwyn Eclipsed. Over the past couple of weeks, we discussed a bunch of buyouts based on the blight mechanic, with cards like Flourishing Defenses, Blowfly Infestation, and Necroskitter spiking huge amounts. Hilariously, Wizards managed to reprint all of those cards in the blight Commander precon, leaving speculators holding the bag as prices crash—which is awesome—but this didn’t end the blight buyouts. This week, Nest of Scarabs (up 593% to $7), Crumbling Ashes (doubled up to $40), and Persistent Constrictor (extended) (up 564% to $19) were all bought out as people attempt to profit by grabbing the hot new tech early.
Meanwhile, the Bloomburrow mythic Maha, Its Feathers Night doubled up to $23 this week, with the Owl hitting on both of the big Commander themes of Lorwyn Eclipsed by being an Elemental and by its static ability giving all of your opponents’ creatures 1 toughness, which works really well with -1/-1 counters. At nearly $20, it’s currently the second most expensive mythic in the set, but it could still climb as players upgrade their new precons.
Finally, we’re still seeing prices of Premodern cards—especially their original printings—creeping up. Xantid Swarm gained 46% this week to $7 as combo protection, while the Planeshift version of Meddling Mage jumped to a massive $46, despite the fact that you can snag the Alara Reborn reprint for $1. If you’ve got a bunch of random old bulk cards laying around, it might be time to dig through them, because the combination of Premodern and the ever-increasing demand for Commander has made a lot of stuff that used to be worthless surprisingly valuable.
