Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |

This week in the world of Magic finance the big news is that paper Standard play is back! Qualifiers and Pro Tours are on the horizon and based on this week's price movement, it seems like players are buying up Standard cards to put together decks for the events. The biggest gainer was Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor (prerelease) which climbed 75% to just under $13. The three-drop is currently the 6th most played creature in Standard showing up in a bunch of different black-based midrange and aggro decks. Not to be outdone, the 7th most played creature in Standard - Atraxa, Grand Unifier - also gained 19% this week settling in at $25. Several popular lands including Mirrex (prerelease), Spara's Headquarters (showcase), Jetmir's Garden (showcase), and Deathcap Glade (prerelease) also posted meaningful gains this week.
Meanwhile in Commander it seems that players are still upgrading their Zhulodok, Void Gorger decks even though Commander Masters released nearly 6 months ago. Maybe the precon was a popular holiday gift? Regardless, multiple key pieces including Blightsteel Colossus, Unwinding Clock (schematics) and Akroma's Memorial saw price increase this week with Unwinding Clock (schematics) leading the way by gaining 53% to almost $10. The weirdest part about these spikes it just how late they come after the set release. Seeing big price increases when a new commander precon drops is normal these days, but seeing it happen six months post-release is unique.
Finally, in stranger news, Cyclonic Rift is increasing in price even though we know the card is about to be reprinted in Ravnica Remastered. One aspect of a reprinting that is often missed is that reprinting a card increases demand for the card, in part because people expect the reprint to drop prices, and in part because a reprinting can put a card in front of new eyes that may not have been aware of the card before (although this probably doesn't apply for Cyclonic Rift since it's such a popular Commander staple). Meanwhile, being reprinted at mythic in an expensive and potentially unpopular set like Ravnica Remastered doesn't do that much to increase the supply of a card, which is how we end up in the counter-intuitive place of a reprint actually increasing a card's price!
