This week in Magic finance was driven by Premodern hype. The biggest gainer of the week was the Alliances Reserved List rare Phyrexian Devourer, which shot up more than 900% to $180 as part of some hot new combo decks that look to activate Phyrexian Devourer a bunch of times with its sacrifice trigger on the stack and then Fling (showcase) it at the opponent. It’s unfortunate that Premodern features cards from the Reserved List era; if the format continues to grow, Reserved List cards that are not quite good enough for Legacy or Vintage but are staples in the format could see some massive spikes like this one.

Meanwhile in Standard, Earthbender Ascension (borderless) is on the rise (up 290% to $6) thanks to a new build of Landfall that drops the aggressiveness of Tifa Lockhart for a more resilient plan featuring ramp and Mightform Harmonizer and Icetill Explorer. The card is also very good in Commander as a ramp spell with upside. Assuming it remains viable in Standard, it could be a slow grower that continues to rise.

Finally, in Commander it might finally be The Scorpion God’s time to shine thanks to the blight mechanic from Lorwyn Eclipsed. The mythic gained more than 250% this week to $10 thanks to its ability to be a card-draw engine in a deck built around putting -1/-1 counters on creatures. Unlike the more heavily played The Scarab God, The Scorpion God is fairly light on reprints, with just an Amonkhet Invocation and one of those super-rare Secret Lair bonus cards. This means that if you want a cheap copy to play with, the only option is the $10 Hour of Devastation printing, funneling all the demand into a single print.
