Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive
This was an odd week in finance, with all of the biggest news being tied to events that happened in the past. In Modern, we continue to see some big price spikes, but they are exclusively tied to the Eldrazi deck, which almost everyone agrees only has six weeks left in it before it is hit by a banning. As a result, I'd be looking to sell my copies of Thorn of Amethyst (up 298 % to $14.55), Ensnaring Bridge (up 28% to almost $50.00), Trinisphere (up 64% to $19.43) and Worship (up about 35% to around $20, depending on edition) now before the likely banning reduces their play and decreases their value.
The other big story of the week is the continued price spikes of Reserved List cards tied to the announcement of Eternal Masters. However, unlike last week where most of the big movers were Legacy staples, this week's Reserved List winners are odd casual cards. For example, Divine Intervention increased 79% to about $45, Great Whale jumped 213% to nearly $20, and Scorched Ruins shot up a massive 352% to $16.70. It's starting to look like the right thing to do is buy any Reserved List cards you might need as soon as possible, even if they aren't eternal staples — if you wait, they might very well cost four times as much as they do today, if you can find them at all.
Finally, we now have a Pauper Movers and Shakers page on the site. If you haven't checked it out yet, you definitely should. There's been a lot of talk about paper Pauper becoming a real format over the past couple of weeks, and the finance world is starting to take notice with the prime example being Battle Screech going from $0.40 to $4.00 over the past six weeks. If Pauper suddenly becomes a heavily played format, it may be the next frontier of price spikes as random old commons suddenly get a massive increase in demand. Pay special attention to cards like Battle Screech and Chainer's Edict that only have one uncommon printing (discounting promos) in paper, but are legal in Pauper thanks to being printed at common on Magic Online.
