Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest Standard gainer was Goblin lord Dropkick Bomber, which gained 147% up to nearly $7. Since the release of Aetherdrift, Goblins have been putting up some results on Magic Online, which is driving interest in the archetype. Sadly the deck was mostly missing from this weekend's Pro Tour, which is probably a bad sign for its competitive longevity, at least over the short term. While perhaps not quite good enough for Legacy or Modern Goblins, the three-mana lord has been widely adopted in Commander, which is a nice backstop if it ends up flopping in Standard.
Meanwhile in Modern, Goblin Lore doubled up this week to between $4 and $7 depending on the printing. The sorcery really only sees play in a single archetype - Hollow One - although thanks to the printing of Marauding Mako in Aetherdrift, Hollow One is an archetype on the rise in Modern. In just the past week, the deck has climbed into the tier two range. Whether it can actually take on decks like Boros Energy, Grinding Station, or Eldrazi to break into tier one remains to be seen, but at a minimum it does seem like Hollow One is back on the map.
Last week we talked about Simulacrum Synthesizer rising thanks to the archetypes of Aetherdrift after it jumped from $30 to $40. This week it posted another massive gain, jumping from $40 to just under $65. While artifacts haven't taken over Standard, at least not yet, The Big Score card sees some play from Standard all the way back to Vintage. It's this cross-format demand that has fueled its rise from solid $20 mythic to one of the most expensive cards in Standard.
Finally, we got some early Final Fantasy spoilers this week, and my first impression is that the set is going to be massive and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it surpasses Lord of the Rings to become the best selling Magic set of all time. The bad news is that early presale prices are super high, with Commander precons selling for $70, play booster boxes over $200 and collector booster boxes closer to $500. While I tend to not put a ton of weight into presale prices four months before a set releases, this is at least somewhat concerning. While Wizards has sold Universes Beyond sets at a premium in the past, this time it's different because Final Fantasy is a Standard-legal set. No matter what format you play, you can't really opt out, and if release-day prices are anywhere near these early presale prices the odds are high the set will have some ultra-pricey staples that will not just make eternal players feel the pinch, but potentially drive up the cost of playing what should be Magic's most accessible format in Standard as well.
