Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive
|
|
Without a doubt, the biggest financial news of the week is the announcement of Eternal Masters and its impact on Reserved List cards. Pretty much every Legacy playable card on the Reserve List spiked this week, headlined by the original dual lands, which jumped between 10-15 percent (for non-blue) and 20-25 percent (for blue) on the news that the Reserved List will be staying intact and on the hype of new players potentially buying into the format with the Eternal Masters hype. Other big winners were City of Traitors which jumped 60 percent to break the $100 barrier, Grim Monolith up 55 percent to over $50, and Mox Diamond up 62 percent to $77.47.
In Modern, everything still resolves around the Eldrazi, which are absolutely dominated the SCG event in Louisville this weekend. I'm becoming more convinced by the week that we'll get a banning during the Shadows over Innistrad update. Even if the deck can be beat, I can't imagine Wizards likes the "Eldrazi Winter" narrative which SCG pushed hard on-stream this weekend — a reference to one of the most broken times in Magic's history, the "Black Summer" dominated by Necropotence.
The newest flavor of Eldrazi is UW, which splashes White for Path to Exile and Eldrazi Displacer to give the deck incredible inevitability since it can repeatedly blink Thought-Knot Seer or Drowner of Hope in the late game. Two cards have benefited the most from this change: The first is Adarkar Wastes. The UW painland is up between 200 and 400 percent to about $20 based solely on its play in this UW Eldrazi deck. The second is Worship, which doubled up to $20 this week and has gone from the hot new tech to beat Eldrazi to the hot new mirror-breaking tech in Eldrazi decks.
Finally, in Standard, this week was all about Oath of the Gatewatch cards coming back down to earth. Yes, a couple sideboard cards like Hallowed Moonlight increased a bit, but the bigger news is pretty much every playable Oath of the Gatewatch card dropped between 7 and 15 percent. This even includes Reality Smasher and Thought-Knot Seer, which goes to show that being a key part of the best deck in Modern can't save an in-print card from rapidly increasing supply. I'd wait a couple more weeks before making my buys for rotation; most of these cards have more to lose before they (possibly) start to recover in preparation for the fresh Standard format in April.

The talk of the town this week was the absolute dominance of Eldrazi in Modern. 20 of the Top 32 at #SCGLOU were Eldrazi. 48% of the Day 2 meta at #SCGLOU was Eldrazi. 40+% of the Magic Online meta is Eldrazi. The latest incarnation? UW Eldrazi.
