Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest news comes from Commander. Earlier this week Wizards announced their new bracket system and along with it a list "Game Changers" - cards that have a huge impact on the game and are not allowed in lower brackets. Wizards also announced that unbans are coming to Commander, most likely in April, and it seems like people are taking this news seriously. The cards that were banned this past fall - Dockside Extortionist, Mana Crypt, and Jeweled Lotus saw massive price spikes. Dockside Extortionist gained between 300% and 500% depending on the printing to between $60 and $80. Mana Crypt shot up around 200% to between $160 and $180 while Jeweled Lotus gained around 200% to just under $100. While not quite as high as their pre-ban prices, these cards aren't that far off of their previous prices. Of course, there is no guarantee that any of these cards actually get unbanned, and if they don't people are going to feel pretty silly because prices will crash upon the announcement. On the other hand, if they actually are unbanned, prices will likely spike again in April.
Meanwhile in Aetherdrift, Ketramose, the New Dawn doubled up this week to around $50. The Orzhov God is already making waves all the way back to Modern and has staked its claim as the most expensive card from the set. Where Ketramose goes from here is anyone's guess. If it is a legit Modern staple it could stick around $50 like Abhorrent Oculus (borderless), but at this point it's simply too early to say.
Speaking of Aetherdrift, the set is full of powerful artifacts and as a result Simulacrum Synthesizer is on the rise, gaining 32% this week up to $43. While the artifact has shown up on the fringes of Modern, it might actually be pretty strong in Standard thanks to cards like Repurposing Bay (extended) and the return of affinity. Toss in the fact it comes from The Big Score, a set with unique and likely lower than average supply, and the stage it set for Simulacrum Synthesizer to be one of the most expensive cards in all of Standard.
