Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Robber of the Rich Athreos, God of Passage Purphoros, God of the Forge

This week most of the biggest finance news comes from Worlds, which has had a major impact on the price of Standard cards. The biggest winner of the week was Robber of the Rich which jumped a massive 258% to about $7.50 after being a four-of in the Red Aggro decks at Worlds as well as a four-of sideboard card in some Jeskai Fires builds. Combine this with the fact that the two-drop is a mythic, further limiting supply, it seems very possible that Robber of the Rich can stick at its new post-spike price and might even continue to climb as we move further away from the release of Throne of Eldraine.

The other big news of the week was the announcement of the latest Secret Lair drop featuring the 15 original Theros block Gods in the constellation frame. They are broken down into five drops each featuring three Gods, with individual drops costing $40 and all five going for $150. Right now, one original non-foil copy of the Gods combined costs roughly $150 (although they are much more expensive in foil), which means you aren't getting a massive discount by buying direct from Wizards. So far, most of the Secret Lair drops have offered decent value, especially considering they have come with a bonus Japanese art planeswalker; whether this trend will continue remains to be seen. With so many products coming in 2020, the most important thing you can do for your bank account is to focus on the ones that are especially important to you personally, and avoid making questionable, unnecessary purchases based on the fear of missing out (which is something that is especially important with Secret Lairs thanks to their limited availability).

Finally today, from a more meta perspective, thanks to Collectors Boosters and the proliferation of alt-art versions of cards, foils from Theros: Beyond Death are incredibly cheap. Traditionally foils are worth around twice as much as non-foils with some popular Commander cards commanding even more of a premium, but for Theros: Beyond Death, many popular and playable foils are only worth a tiny bit more (maybe 25%) than their non-foil printing. If you're a fan of foils and looking to pick up singles, there's little financial reason to pick up non-foils at this point with prices being so similar. Long term it will be interesting to see what happens with these foils. It might be that they will be replaced by things like constellation frames and extended-border cards as the "bling" of choice, which could mean that it takes a long time for even the most popular Commander foils to increase much in price, if they ever do at all.
