Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |

This week in the world of Magic finance, it's all about Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The full main set spoiler released Friday and we already have some huge price spikes from older cards that synergize with the new set. The biggest winner was Artificer's Intuition. The Fifth Dawn rare jumped from $2.50 to over $40 before settling around $20 thanks to a buyout driven by its potential to go infinite in Legacy with Containment Construct. If you can get both cards on the battlefield together, you can use Artificer's Intuition to tutor up a bunch of copies of Lion's Eye Diamond to make infinite mana, tutor up Elixir of Immortality to shuffle everything back into your library, and eventually find a Walking Ballista to close out the game; an easy two-card infinite combo. The odd part of the buyout is that the combo really only works in Legacy, and there just isn't much paper Legacy play happening at the moment. Are Legacy players buying Artificer's Intuition to play in a combo deck or is it speculators buying Artificer's Intuition in the hopes that the combo will break out and net them a profit? My guess is the latter. While Artificer's Intuition feels like the kind of card that should be broken and it was probably legitimately underpriced at just over $2, it's hard for me to imagine Legacy driving enough demand to keep its price this high. It should keep trending down as the hype of spoiler season wears off.
Meanwhile in Commander, Shrines are on the rise thanks to the printing of Go-Shintai of Life's Origin which gives the tribe a really flavorful and powerful commander. Sanctum of All shot up over 400% to $5 while pretty much all of the original Kamigawa Shrines - Honden of Cleansing Fire, Honden of Seeing Winds, Honden of Life's Web and friends - doubled or tripled in price, most now in the $5 to $10 range. Thankfully they are all uncommons which should keep prices from getting too out of hand, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the new, higher prices mostly stick. Looking at past sales, a lot of copies are being sold at the new, higher price. This suggests that the Shrine price increased based on real demand from players building Shrine Commander decks rather than just a speculative buyout. If you're planning to build Go-Shintai of Life's Origin in Commander, plan on paying more for your support cards or waiting (potentially a long time) for a reprinting to drop prices.
Last but not least, Blood Funnel doubled in price this week to $3 thanks to Tatsunari, Toad Rider. In a Tatsunari, Toad Rider deck, Blood Funnel is a pretty absurd source of ramp for enchantments. You can cast them at a two mana discount and get around Blood Funnel's drawback by repeatedly sacrificing the Frog token that Tatsunari makes. The problem is that this only works for enchantments and if you want to cast other noncreature spells like instants, sorceries, artifacts, or planeswalkers, they are likely to get countered by Blood Funnel. Maybe some infinite combo is discovered which makes the plan work, but as is, it's hard for me to imagine the "combo" being worth it if it's just ramping. It seems like the basis for the buyout was an r/MTGFinance Reddit post, which makes me think that Blood Funnel's price increase is based more on speculation than actual player demand.
