Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Ajani, Strength of the Pride Inverter of Truth Crystal Shard

This week was a busy one in the world of Magic finance with the impact of the paper release of Theros: Beyond Death being felt in Standard, and Pioneer Players Tour events shaking up older formats. Some of the biggest winners of the week have crossover appeal, showing up in rising decks both formats. Ajani, Strength of the Pride (up 75% to $13) has benefited from the printing of Heliod, Sun-Crowned and is showing up in white-based lifegain decks in both Pioneer and Standard. Along the same lines, Absorb (up 104% to $5) has shot up in demand thanks to the rise of UW Control in Standard and Pioneer.

In Pioneer, the new Inverter of Truth / Thassa's Oracle combo deck is driving prices. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries (usually a two-of backup version of Thassa's Oracle) more than doubled in price on the week to just over $7 while Inverter of Truth itself increased a massive 403% from near bulk to just under $10. While it's always risky to trust new combo decks since they sometimes run into problems once the metagame adjusts and people start packing more hate cards in their sideboards, there are some signs that the deck is real, with the biggest being that it came in as the most-played archetype at the two Players Tour events this weekend. If you have copies of either card sitting around, the best plan is likely to sell or trade them into the hype. It's hard to imagine that the Inverter Combo deck is good enough to remain in the top tiers of the Pioneer meta, but not too good that it avoids the banned list conversation.

Finally, Crystal Shard doubled up to over $4 this week. This might seem strange considering that the card doesn't see any tournament play, but it seems to be a case of the Game Knights effect. The artifact recently saw play in a Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath deck in the popular Commander gameplay series, and it doesn't take that many of the series more than 500,000 viewers buying a copy of an old, relatively low-supply card for it to increase in price. With the focus on Commander in 2020 and the huge popularity of Game Knights, make sure to keep an eye on cards that look good on camera. There's a decent chance that they will end up increasing in price, especially if they are older and haven't been reprinted recently.
