Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, we’re starting to see the impact of the impending release of Lorwyn Eclipsed. Necroskitter more than doubled to around $45 this week thanks to its synergy with the blight mechanic, which lets you put -1/-1 counters on creatures, with the three-drop allowing you to steal anything that you manage to blight. The big question here is whether Necroskitter might show up in the Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander precons, which we know feature a blight-themed deck. While $40+ reprints in Commander precons are rare, considering Necroskitter was just $15 before the recent spike, it is possible. The same is also true of Blowfly Infestation, which gained 139% to $12 this week, and Crumbling Ashes (up 75% to $12), except the risk is even greater considering both were just $4 uncommons until a few days ago.
Meanwhile, the Phyrexian: All Will Be One Commander mythic Otharri, Suns' Glory shot up more than 100% to $14 this week thanks to increased interest in experience counters brought about by the PlayStation Secret Lair drops and Avatar. In the old days, it was rare to see Commander precon cards hold much value since we’d only get one set of decks that would be sold for an entire year, making supply extremely high. Things are different today, though, with a new set releasing every seven-ish weeks, which puts a soft cap on how long people are buying the decks (you can still buy older precons, but most people focus on the shiny new thing). I expect we’ll continue to see more price movement from precon cards next year.
Finally, Premodern is still moving the market, with the Torment printing of Circular Logic, a popular counterspell in Madness decks, shooting up 81% to $9 this week. Thanks to the increasing interest in the format, if you have a bunch of old bulk sitting around, it might be worth digging through it. While you don’t have to play the original printings of cards in Premodern, based on recent price movement it does seem like the Premodern community values the original printings, which has led to a number of situations where a card with a $0.25 reprint—like Circular Logic—ends up being pretty expensive if you have the old printing.
