Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
Happy Holidays everyone! This week has actually been pretty quite on the finance front, but we did get some big news yesterday with the spoiling of all the Aether Revolt Inventions. The group looks solid, but seems to lack some of the high-end staples (like Sol Ring, Mana Vault and Mana Crypt) that we saw in Kaladesh. The "chase" cards seem to be Ensnaring Bridge and Engineered Explosives, which are fine choices, but will probably have a difficult time maintaining the $125+ we've seen from the best Kaladesh Inventions. This has been a trend with the Masterpiece Series so far—the first set of the block has all the best options, while the second set gets a handful of semi-good cards and things like Ornithopter. As such, it might be best to temper expectations for super high end Masterpiece Series card in future second sets.
As for older cards, one of the big winners of the week is Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, which is up to $35 after being about $20 only a couple of weeks ago. As far as I can tell, this movement is almost certainly based on Frontier where the flipwalker is the single most played card in the format. This makes me want to pick up potential Frontier staples soon. Many of the important card in the format are at post-rotation lows with nowhere to go but up if the format takes off.
Finally, on Magic Online Kaladesh booster are super cheap, at about 2.3 tix each. As a result, they are a tempting buy at the moment. On Magic Online, the two major influences on booster prices are draft formats (which pull boosters out of the system) and prize payout (which put boosters into the system). Right now, all boosters given out on prizes are Kaladesh boosters, while Kaladesh is also the main draft format. Unfortunately, with the addition of boosters to Treasure Chests, the supply is outweighing the demand and bringing down the price. In another month things will change. People will still need to "spend" two Kaladesh booster to draft after Aether Revolt comes out, but prizes will change over to all Aether Revolt boosters, meaning that the supply of Kaladesh booster should start to dry up and the prices should start to rise.
