Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty rules the day. While official spoiler season don't start until the end of January, we got a handful of early spoilers and set art this week, with the later suggesting that the Samurai tribe will be making its return in the set. This lead to several Samurai cards from original Kamigawa being bought out. Isao, Enlightened Bushi, increased more than 1000% to $26, Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho 540% to $28 and Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo 223% to $20. The real question is whether these spoiler season price spikes actually stick, and based on the Zombie spikes that happened around the released of Innistrad: Crimson Vow and Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, the answer is sort of. While cards like Plague Belcher, Relentless Dead, Cryptbreaker have all dropped some from their post-spike peak, all are way more expensive now than they were before their respective buyouts. This suggests that you'll save some amount of money by waiting to pick up the Samurai now that prices are already high, but in the future, you'll save the most money picking up cards before spoiler season even starts, assuming you can guess right.
Not to be outdone by the Samurai, we've seen some price spikes from Ninjas and Spirits as well, with Higure, the Still Wind jumping 47% to $15 and Kira, Great Glass-Spinner shooting up 20% to $13.50. On one level, this makes sense: Spirits and Ninjas are supported tribes in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. On the other hand, there is risk. With Commander precons coming alongside every major set release, it doesn't seem impossible that a precon is built around one of these tribes (the same is true of Samurai, although a Samurai precon is perhaps less likely than that of a more popular tribe like Ninjas). If a card like Higure, the Still Wind gets reprinted in a Commander precon, it's likely to end up near bulk prices. If you can dodge a reprinting, you'll likely save a decent chunk of money, but if the cards you buy get a reprinting, you'll end up kicking yourself for not waiting for prices to drop.
Finally, a quick reminder that the few cards that have been previewed from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty have greatly inflated asking prices at the moment. If you look on the site you'll see that Atsushi, the Blazing Sky is currently $56 and Kaito Shizuki is over $60. This is because there are barely any copies listed for sale at the moment. Take Kaito Shizuki for example. Right now there are two vendors selling on TCGplayer, one for $50 and another for $75, giving us a TCGplayer-mid average of $62.50. As more copies are listed the price will normalize as sellers undercut each other in an effort to actually sell their copies. For now, take Kamigawa prices with a huge grain of salt.
