Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive
Since it's been a fairly quite week in Standard, both in tournament play and price movement, for this week's finance update we are going to focus mostly on Modern. First, the biggest news of the week is that 8th Edition Ensnaring Bridge was bought out and its price spiked from $25 to $40. However, these numbers are a bit deceiving. Stronghold and 7th Edition are still floating in the mid-to-low $20, about the same price as before the buyout &emdash; although their supply is low enough that someone could buy them out as well if they really wanted. The reason for the buyout is a bit less clear, but my best guess is that it was Sam Black's great day one performance with Lantern Control at the SCG Invitational.
On Magic Online, the prices of Modern staples are increasing almost across the board. Right after Modern Masters 2015, the value of the Modern index which contains 211 format staples across rarities dropped to its lowest point since 2012 at 938 tix. Today it's up to 1648 tix and heading towards its all time high of just over 1750 tix. I still believe the format has room to grow with a Modern Pro Tour coming this winter. A lot of Modern Masters 2015 cards are still appealing, including Fulminator Mage, Cryptic Command, Karn Liberated, Vendilion Clique and Daybreak Coronet. With mass reprintings for the format still (most likely) a year and a half off, these cards (another other Modern staples) seem like a great place to be for the next 12 months.
Finally, one note on Standard. Crush of Tentacles, likely designed by Dr. Krieger from Archer, was spoiled at the Magic World Cup. Basically it's a cross between a Whelming Wave / Evacuation type effect and Part the Waterveil's "make a big creature if you do something extra" sub-theme. People are trying to pre-sell on eBay for as much a $20 a copy, but don't be fooled, this is most likely a bulk mythic. Even in the best case, it's a just-above-bulk mythic. There is absolutly no reason to spend $20 on a presale, especially since the seller cannot ship the card until after the set is released in January. Save your money and wait for the price to drop to $5 or less.
