Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Radiant, Archangel Stitch in Time Lotus Field

This week, most of our biggest winners are once again tied to the Commander format and more specifically Commander Legends in one way or another. Leading the way is Radiant, Archangel. Just a few months ago, the Reserved List rare was $5; now after multiple buyouts, it's $50. This huge price increase goes to show just how little it takes for older Commander cards to shoot up in price. There are currently more than 200,000 Commander decks on EDHRec that could play Radiant, Archangel, but just 288 decks actually play Radiant, Archangel. So why the buyout? As far as I can tell people want to play Radiant, Archangel for flavor purposes in Radiant, Serra Archangel decks. If you own any cards that happen to be on the Reserved List, hold onto them. It's often just a matter of time until even the least playable Reserved List cards end up getting bought out and shooting up in price, and doubly so today with Wizards newfound focus on Commander.

Along the same lines, Stitch in Time increased another 28% on the week to just under $10 after being essentially a bulk rare pre-Commander Legends. The printing of Krark, the Thumbless has increased interest in coin flipping decks in the Commander format and along with it the demand for Stitch in Time. If you need a copy, it's worth keeping in mind that Stitch in Time was reprinted in the Izzet Guilds of Ravnica Guild Kits, which sold in the $12 range. The big question is whether your LGS still has Guild Kits in stock; Guilds of Ravnica is a couple of years old now supply has dried up in many places. If you do find a copy, you might be able to get not only a Stitch in Time, but a bunch of other cards as a bonus for the same price as a Stitch in Time on the secondary market.

Finally on Magic Online, both Lotus Field and Tale's End spiked in price this week thanks to a unique Jeskai Control deck from MTGO user aspiringspike that went 5-0 in a Modern league. This lead to Lotus Field tripling in price from under 2 tix to over 6 tix and Tale's End doubling from 1.5 tix to 3 tix. Meanwhile, the paper versions of both cards remain unchanged. While Magic Online price movement doesn't always foreshadow paper price movement, it is worth keeping both cards in mind. If the deck continues to perform and we eventually get the return of paper tournaments, they could have long-term potential. At the very least you might as well hold on to your copies just in case.
