Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Rhonas the Indomitable Brazen Borrower Cavalier of Flame

This week, after another round of bannings, Pioneer once again leads our finance news, with early results suggesting that Mono-Green is the bigger winner of the post-ban format. Leading the way was Rhonas the Indomitable (up 62% to $11) which is extremely powerful in Mono-Green Aggro thanks to a slew of mana dorks allowing it to come down on turn two and enable The Great Henge on turn three. Speaking of The Great Henge, it also ticked up on the week thanks to heavy Pioneer and Standard play, climbing 7% to around $12.50, while Heroic Intervention increased 17% to $14 as a way to protect a board full of green creatures from the wraths of UW Control. The main risk here, as with many top Pioneer decks at the moment, is that Mono-Green Aggro might actually be too strong in the format and could be targeted by a banning. Selling spiking cards like Rhonas the Indomitable is the safest move for now, although things should settle down in 2020 when Pioneer moves to the normal banned and restricted schedule.

The other big finance news happening this week was the drop of Secret Lair. While the set itself is pretty well known, Wizards surprised everyone by including War of the Spark planeswalkers with the stained glass art from the War of the Spark trailer as a bonus along with each drop. While the market for the stained glass planeswalkers is still in flux, they seem to have significant value, with the worst of the bunch (random uncommon planeswalkers) being in the $10-$20 range, with some of the most heavily-played planeswalkers like Teferi, Time Raveler selling for $100 to $150 on Ebay in recent days. While the unique art of these planeswalkers should help them maintain value long term, if you already have your copies in hand, it would be tempting to cash out while supply is still slow as supply will be increasing for the next month or two as more people receive their Secret Lair sets.

Finally in Standard, things are fairly quite as we wait for Theros: Beyond Death previews to start in a few weeks. The biggest winner of the week were Jeskai Fires cards including Cavalier of Flame, Cavalier of Gales, and Brazen Borrower. With the Cavalier cycle in specific, it's important to remember that rotating Standard cards usually peak over the winter or early spring, so if you're not using your copies, it's probably worth selling or trading them away in the near future. In a world where Wizards is intent on printing powerful Standard cards every set, it's hard to know what the metagame will look like after Theros: Beyond Death. Even if Jeskai Fires remains playable, prices will start to tick down in a few short months as players and vendors start to look towards next year's rotation.
