Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance we're led by an Avatar uncommon in Boomerang Basics, which shot up more than 900% to just under $6. At Worlds this weekend the card was the most played in the Standard portion of the event and has been showing up all the way back to Modern. The question is just how high this uncommon can go. Based on the price of other high-end Standard uncommons, likely not a ton higher. Stock Up is currently $8, and Into the Flood Maw, the card that Boomerang Basics has replaced in many lists, is over $5. While both cards probably see a bit more eternal play than Boomerang Basics currently, considering Boomerang Basics is newer and less straightforward than something like Stock Up, it still has a chance to grow in older formats. If it remains the most played card in Standard and continues to catch on in older formats, hitting $10 isn't out of the question—although even its current $6 price makes it an outlier as far as in-print uncommons go.
Speaking of Standard gainers, The Legend of Kuruk gained more than 400% this week to $18. After starting presales around $16, the card dropped all the way down to $3 at release before gaining it all back—and then some—in the past week. This is because the card has proven itself to be surprisingly playable in Standard, showing up in Dimir Self-Bounce and some builds of Izzet Lessons, while also getting some Commander play in various Avatar-themed decks. Where the Saga goes from here is anyone's guess. It’s currently the 7th most expensive card in the Avatar main set, and while it has been better than expected, it still doesn't see that much play. If I had to guess, I'd say this is The Legend of Kuruk’s peak, at least for the short term, although if it develops into a true staple it could continue to rise—it is a mythic, after all.
Finally, in Commander, the Odyssey rare Catalyst Stone was bought out, spiking more than 400% to $19. The card is a popular addition to Iroh, Grand Lotus Commander decks, where it makes flashing back lessons free and reduces the cost of your other spells with Iroh on the battlefield. However, it’s worth pointing out that cards like Artist's Talent can do something similar while being relevant in more situations. The biggest…umm…catalyst here is that Catalyst Stone has never been reprinted, making its supply tiny compared to the size of the current playerbase. I’d look to dump any extra copies now while prices are high; once the initial hype for the new Avatar legends dies down, Catalyst Stone’s price should follow.
