Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Pariah's Shield Sundial of the Infinite Scroll Rack

This week the Magic economy is still feeling the ripples of the release of Commander Legends, with many of the biggest winners of the week being cards that synergize with one of the legends from the set. Leading the way this week is Pariah's Shield (which doubled in price this week to $10.25), which combos with one of the most popular new legends from the set Jared Carthalion, True Heir. Assuming you can maintain the monarchy and get a Jared Carthalion, True Heir on the battlefield with a Pariah's Shield equipped, all the damage that you would take instead redirects to Jared, Jared prevents the damage and grows as a result. This not only quickly turns Jared Carthalion, True Heir into a lethal threat, but also makes sure that you keep the crown since it becomes impossible for opponents to deal you combat damage! The problem with Pariah's Shield is outside of Jared decks and a couple of other unpopular legends (Sekki, Seasons' Guide and Cho-Manno, Revolutionary) the equipment doesn't really see much play in Commander (showing up in 0% of decks according to EDHRec), which suggests that its current price is driven by Commander Legends hype more than true playability. If you need a copy for Jared Carthalion, True Heir, you'll probably have to pay the current, inflated price, otherwise, wait for a reprint to drives Pariah's Shield back down towards bulk rare status.

Likewise, Sundial of the Infinite is on the rise after finally finding a true home in Commander thanks to Obeka, Brute Chronologist, jumping 59% to just under $7 this week. This provides a good reminder of how cards with unique effects (like ending your own turn) are always potentially just one set away from becoming playable and spiking in price. With Wizards' newfound focus on printing interesting, weird legends into the Commander format, rather than trading away or selling seemingly useless odd-ball cards like Sundial of the Infinite, it's often just better to stick them away in a box or binder and wait until a combo or synergy is printed that suddenly increases the demand and price of the card. The risk of holding onto cards that are already near-bulk prices is low and the potential reward is great.

As for Commander Legends as a whole, the set actually increased in price this week. On November 28, a complete set of Commander Legends would set you back $439. Today it's up to $659, for a massive 33% increase in the past seven days. This increase was lead by many of the chase reprints in the set with Scroll Rack jumping 20%, Mana Drain 7%, Sunforger 36%, Sigarda's Aid 11% and Command Tower 75%. This might be a sign that the reprints from Commander Legends are already nearing their price floor and will start their long, slow ascent until they are eventually reprinted again. If you need any of the important cards reprinted in the set, my advice is to get them soon before it's too late.
