Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Standard, the biggest finance news was the rise of Kethis, the Hidden Hand. The legendary three-drop has suddenly become the key piece of one of the most-hyped decks in Standard: a historic-based combo deck named after Kethis that looks to mill with Diligent Excavator by looping historic spells from the graveyard with Kethis. While the deck is good now, it likely won't survive the rotation of Mox Amber. While Kethis, the Hidden Hand is a fine longer term hold for Commander, I'd look to sell into the hype before rotation.
As for Modern, we're still seeing the impact of Twiddle Storm. Last week it was Psychic Puppetry that shot up in price, this week it was Dream's Grip (up 507% to $1.80), Ideas Unbound (up 75% to $2.95) and Past in Flames (up 53% to $10). The deck could very well be real, but we'll have to wait until after tomorrow's banned and restricted announcement to find out for sure, as Modern will certainly adjust and one of the current reasons to play Twiddle Storm is that it's actually decent at racing Hogaak decks with its turn three kills. For now, the best move is likely to dig through your bulk for cards like Psychic Puppetry, Past in Flames, or any of the other cheap pieces in the deck.
Finally, a reminder that tomorrow is the next banned and restricted announcement, and pretty much everyone agrees that Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis will be banned. This should open up the Modern format, so keep an eye on non-Hogaak Modern Horizons cards over the next few weeks. It's possible that something like Seasoned Pyromancer, Urza, Lord High Artificer, or Wrenn and Six ends up the centerpiece of the next best deck in the format and could spike as a result. Along the same lines, if you're holding onto Hogaak-centric piece like Vengevine or Bloodghast, selling or trading them away pre-banning makes sense, although at this point it might be too late to get a great price.
