Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, most of the big finance news comes from Modern, where a couple of strange cards have doubled in price. First Temporal Mastery—part of the Taking Turns deck—jumped about 100% to around $20 (depending on the printing). We've reached the point where Modern Masters 2017 is far enough in the rear view mirror that cards reprinted in the set are increasing in price. Expect to see more of these increases in coming months, especially with themed Masters sets being the new norm. Second, Groundbreaker, the green Ball Lightning, spiked 161% to nearly $10 after showing up in 5-0 Mono-Green Stompy list, although this was certainly aided by the fact that the three-drop is an older card that has never been reprinted. I'd look to sell into the hype, especially for Groundbreaker which isn't even widely adopted in Mono-Green Stompy.
In Legacy, the new trend is Unlimited cards increasing in price. Traditionally Unlimited is much less desirable than the black-bordered Alpha or Beta printings, but as Alpha and Beta cards become hard to find and extremely expensive if you're looking to play Old School, Unlimited is a strong budget option. Plus, these cards are still quite scarce and collectible. While there is a ton more Unlimited than Alpha or Beta (with Alpha having 1,100 of each rare printed, Beta 3,200, and Unlimited 18,000), Unlimited's print run is much more similar to Alpha/Beta than it is to Revised, which had nearly 300,000 of each rare printed. Expect to see more Unlimited price spikes in the future as both collectors and players realize that the set is underpriced compared to its supply, especially with Old School growing in popularity.
Finally, in Standard Teferi, Hero of (em>Dominaria</em) ticked up 10% this week to $40, making it the most expensive card in the format. Considering that most of the cards that work well with Teferi survive rotation, it's not impossible that it climbs a bit higher if UWx Control proves to be the best deck in the format after rotation.
