Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Jace, the Mind Sculptor Gaea's Cradle Gate to Phyrexia

This week, the focus of the finance world is still on Double Masters. Prices from the set are still bouncing around, but in general there hasn't been a huge crash since the set officially released a week ago, and some of the top cards have already increased a bit in price. However, there are some great deals to be found on the singles market, especially for foils. In many instances, you can pick up foil copies of Double Masters reprints for roughly the same price as non-foils, even for some of the most in-demand cards in the set. For example, a non-foil Cyclonic Rift is currently $25 while a foil copy is $30. Likewise, a regular Jace, the Mind Sculptor comes in at $65 while a foil is just $75. Meanwhile, further down the list there are a ton of playable foils in the $1-$2 range including cards like Dualcaster Mage, Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer, Master of Etherium, Ratchet Bomb and a bunch of good commons and uncommons. If you don't mind (or even like) foils and are in the market for Double Masters singles, make sure to check both the foil and non-foil prices, you might be surprised to find that you can "upgrade" to foil without spending much (or even any) additional money.

Meanwhile, the price of Reserved List Commander staples is once again on the rise, with perhaps the biggest example being Gaea's Cradle which shot up from around $600 to near $1000 in the past week, although cards like Gate to Phyrexia, Memory Jar and Tithe also roughly doubled in price over the past seven days. Until Wizards gets ride of the Reserved List, there's not a whole lot that Commander playgroups can do other than normalize the use of proxies. While counterfeit cards are never acceptable, $1,000 is not a reasonable price for a single Commander staple. Take a basic Forest (254), sharpie "Gaea's Cradle" at the top and have fun playing Commander.

Finally, we're closing in on Standard rotation and the release of Zendikar Rising. Assuming things work as the normally do, spoiler season should start sometime in the beginning of September. With paper Magic mostly on hold at the moment, selling or trading away rotating cards that you don't need for Commander or formats like Pioneer or Modern is a solid plan. Meanwhile, if you are thinking of preordering a box, keep the new Set Boosters in mind. While we still need more information to calculate the expected value, if you're opening a box because you enjoy opening boxes (and not planning to draft) they will likely strictly better than a traditional Draft Booster box. Just don't pay too much for a box. From everything I've heard Wizards estimate of a Set Booster costing about $1 more than a Draft Booster should be correct, which means current pre-order prices of $126 on Amazon and around $170 on Ebay are likely too high (and in the case of Ebay way, way too high). Considering a Set Booster box only has 30 packs, each pack costing $1 more than a Draft Booster would put the price in the $110-$115 a box range. Prices should drop as we get closer to the release of the set.
