Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest gainer was Phyrexian Tribute with the Reserved List rare being bought out and jumping from under $4 to nearly $20. On one level this makes a lot of sense, the sorcery is one of only two mono-black cards in Magic that can destroy an artifact (alongside Gate to Phyrexia, which costs a massive $70), which makes it seem like an appealing option for mono-black Commander decks. On the other, the card sees essentially zero play in Commander (coming in at 0% of decks on EDHRec) because paying three mana and sacrificing two creatures is a super high cost to blow up a single artifact, which makes it pretty clear that this is a finance-driven buyout rather than actual demand from players. The price should start to tick back down - it doesn't seem like many copies have sold for the post-buyout price - but the days of Phyrexian Tribute being a near-bulk rare are likely over.
In newer formats, Portable Hole saw a big increase this week, shooting up 69% to $4, which is especially impressive considering it's rotating from Standard in three weeks. The artifact has proven it be one of the most important removal spells in the Pioneer format and sees a bit of play in artifact decks in Modern as well. If you're cleaning out your collection for rotation, make sure you pull your Portable Holes from your bulk.
We talked about Indomitable Creativity last week, but the mythic continued its rise, nearly doubling up again to $17 after being as low as $6 the beginning of July and at near-bulk prices a year ago. The clear message here is that while paper Magic might be primarily focused on Commander these days, seeing heavy play in formats like Modern and Pioneer still matters quite a bit when it comes to the price of a card as the price increase roughly lines up with Indomitable Creativity going from unplayed to Modern staple. While it's hard to see prices going too much higher, it's also unlikely that the price will drop much until it is eventually reprinted. So if you want to play a Indomitable Creativity deck, it's going to cost quite a bit more than it did just a short time ago.
