Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of finance the biggest winner was Uba Mask which jumped 167% to $12. There's been a surprising amount of interestin cards from Kamigawa lately, perhaps in part because of speculation that we might be returning to the plane in the near future thanks Wizards registering a domain for Kamigawa: Neon Destiny. The more immediately driver of Uba Mask increase is that it's a popular upgrade for Prosper, Tome-Bound Commander decks. While Uba Mask does offer a unique effect, a big part of its current price is low supply since Uba Mask has never been reprinted, once it does it's price should fall back down towards bulk, because outside of Prosper, Tome-Bound Commander decks it doesn't have much demand.
Meanwhile in Standard, we're starting to see the format prepare for rotation. Goldspan Dragon (planeswalker stamp) has proven to be the premiere threat in Standard 2022 - basically pre-rotated Standard on Magic Arena - and it's price is shooting up as a result, with the Dragon gaining 34% to $36 this week. While not a true staple the Dragon also sees a reasonable amount of play in Commander, either in Dragon decks or Treasure decks, making it somewhat similar to The Great Henge (planeswalker stamp), which briefly hit $60 last year due to a combination of Commander and Standard play. While it is hard to see Goldspan Dragon (planeswalker stamp) getting too much more expensive, if it really does end up being the best threat in post rotation Standard it's not impossible that it continues to tick up over the coming months.
Finally, checking in on Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, the expected value of the set has actually increased slightly over the past week. As we discusses last week, prices of cards from the set are so low it's hard to imagine them dropping much more and that prices could even increase. With prices already on the rise, it is probably time to pick up the cards you need from the set while they are still cheep. There is little downside in doing so since prices are near their floor, and there is a decent amount of upside as prices could spike after Standard rotates in another month. I'd avoid the already-expensive mythics and instead focus on cheap-but-playable rares.
