Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The big news this week is that we got the entire Dominaria spoiler on Friday, and while a full EV breakdown will have to wait for next week (giving prices a chance to normalize), right now it looks as if the value of the mythics from the set is extremely high. Based on SCG preorder prices, the average mythic is worth about $13 at the moment, and even at TCGplayer-low it comes out to about $9.35, which is roughly double of some recent sets.
In Standard, the big winner this week is Combat Celebrant which jumped 42% to over $8. While infinite combos with Helm of the Host seem fun, it's the emergence of the UR God-Pharaoh's Gift deck that is driving the price movement. I'd sell copies soon if you aren't playing the deck; Standard rotation is only about five months away which means Combat Celebrant (and most rotating cards) will start declining in value soon.
Meanwhile, in the world of casual play we are seeing the legendary theme of Dominaria having an impact with Day of Destiny increasing more than 200% on the week to about $7. Over the past year or two Commander has proven to be one of the most influential formats as far as card prices are concerned and price spikes based on casual themes that get support in the newest set has become the norm. If you see a sweet theme to build a Commander deck around during spoiler season, pick up the cards you need early. There are likely hundreds or even thousands of players thinking the same as you and if you wait too long, you'll end up paying a premium, especially for older, low supply cards like Day of Destiny.
